Purchasing Site For New Laois Sports Arena 'Too Expensive'

The new facility has been subject to an ongoing campaign.

Buying a site for a new sports arena isn't a viable option, according to Laois County Council.

The update comes following calls for a new facility in Portlaoise from councillors and sports clubs.

CEO of Laois County Council, John Mulholland, told members during a monthly meeting yesterday, buying a site for the arena would be 'too expensive.'

However, he did provide an update on the 'emerging options' for the new facility.

The first of those is an assessment and a design for additional and upgraded facilities at Moneyballytyrrell.

The other would see additional, 'superior' outdoor playing areas developed at Tyrrell's Land, which is already owned by the local authority.

However, Mr. Mulholland says servicing that parcel of land 'would be difficult.'

He says there's no further information available yet, and the project would be undertaken by the new Council, after June's elections.
