Street Light Trials in Offaly

The ESB is to begin trials of a new street lighting system in Offaly that is 35% more efficient than standard street lighting.

The white light Compact fluroescent lamps need  just a 40 watt bulbs for each fixture. It is being tried in a new eco-friendly housing estate that has just been built in Kilcormac.

The homes will use solar energy and wood pellets along with an airtight membrane to give a carbon footprint estimated to be just 5 per cent of that of a conventiaonl home.

The 13 homes will not need radiators because of the heat recovery and ventilation systems.

The ESB has picked the estate as a possible forerunner for similar schemes throughout the country.
