Plans To Move Dublin Asylum Seekers To Midlands Without Consultation 'Extremely Damaging'

The move would see room made for those camping on the Grand Canal.

Plans to move asylum seekers from Dublin to the midlands without consultation is 'extremely damaging.'

That's the claim from Aontú Leader and Meath West TD, Peadar Toibín, after it was revealed International Protection Applicants in the capital could be transferred to the region.

It's not been confirmed where in the midlands they would be accommodated, but they would be moved from Crooksling and Citywest in a bid to make room for those camping on the Grand Canal.

The European Election Candidate in Midlands North West says it shows the State doesn't trust communities:

As many as 50 asylum seekers are being moved from Dublin to the midlands.

The men are being transferred from Citywest to an IPAS centre in the region, however the exact location isn't known.

It follows a multi-agency operation in the capital this morning, which saw authorities remove a number of tents from the Grand Canal.
